Paula Dance was born and raised in Martin County, NC.   She is the proud mother three and two grandchildren who she adores.  She will receive her BS in Criminal Justice this fall. Sheriff Dance began her career in law enforcement more than 28 years ago with little more than a dream of protecting and serving the community. Her family have served as the guiding light for  her hard work, integrity and treating all people with respect.

Sheriff Dance served 4-years with the Martin County Sherriff department followed by 25-years with the Pitt County Sheriff's in the roles of Sgt of the Deomestic Vioence Unit, Major Crimes Investigator for the Investigations Unit, and Major 3rd in command.  She has served as an influential leader in the legacy of the Sheriff's Office. Today, Sherriff dance is the first African American female Sheriff in the State of North Carolina and 1 of 6 in the United States of America.

One of her greatest passions has always been the pursuit of justice for
children, adults and families, and to strengthen the relationships between law enforcement and our community by providing a peaceful, complete, and inclusive community based policing. Serving others has always been the foundation of her core values.
